Over Optimization
The aim of any good SEO campaign is to achiieve a balance between making our
site attractive to search engines and providing a good experience for users.
There is absolutely no point in optimizing to the extent that all your new
users will find your site difficult or unpleasant to use. Similarly, there is
no point in providing the most wonderful user experience ever created if no-one
will ever find it and benefit from it. To this end, I outline below some of the
pitfalls you should avoid during your search engine optimization endeavers.
Types of Over-optimization
Over optimization comes in several guises:
-
Bland or Boring
- don't let your desire to build your site in a search engine friendly
manner force you into creating a bland or boring experience for users. It
doesn't have to.
-
Difficult to Use
- don't sacrifice ease of use in an attempt to rank more highly in
the search results. Your new visitors will do you no good if they cannot
navigate and use your site effectively once they find it.
-
Deceitful - don't pretend to be what you are not! In this
category are all the "dodgy" tactics that will get you in trouble with the
search engines and, in the worst case scenario, banned from their indexes.
